Verses from
the Old Testament Creation
of Man and Woman
(Genesis 1, 26-28.
31)
God made every kind of wild beast, every kind of cattle, and every kind
of land reptile. God saw that it was good.
God said, ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness
of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds
of heaven, the cattle, all the wild beasts and all the reptiles that
crawl upon the earth’.
God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created
him, male and female he created them.
God blessed them, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply,
fill the earth and conquer it. Be masters of the fish of the sea, the
birds of heaven and all living animals on the earth.’
God saw all he had made, and indeed it was very good. Evening came and
morning came: the sixth day.
Prayer
of Two Young
Spouses
(Tobit 8, 5-7)
She stood up, and they began praying for protection, and this was how
he began:
‘You are blessed, O God of our fathers:
blessed, too, is your name forever and ever.
Let the heavens bless you
And all things you have made
For evermore.
It was you, who created Adam,
You who created Eve his wife
to be his help and support;
and from these two the human race was born.
It was you who said,
“It is not good that the man should be alone;
let us make him a helpmate like himself”.
And so I do not take my sister
for any lustful motive;
I do it in singleness of heart.
Be kind enough to have pity on her and on me
and bring us to old age together.’

Verses from the New Testament
The Beatitudes
(Mathew 5, 1-10)
Seeing the crowds, he went up to the hill. There he sat down and was
joined by his disciples. Then he began to speak. This is what he taught
them:
‘How happy are the poor in spirit;
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Happy the gentle they shall have the earth for their heritage,
Happy those who mourn; they shall be comforted.
Happy those who hunger and thirst for what is right; they shall
be satisfied.
Happy the merciful; they shall have mercy shown them.
Happy the pure in heart; they shall see God.
Happy the peacemakers: they shall be called sons of God.
Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right: theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.’
Salt of the earth
and light of the world.
(Mathew 5, 13-16)
‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes
tasteless,
what can make it salty again? It is a good for nothing, and can only be
thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.
‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top
cannot be hidden.
No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub: In the same way your light
must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they
may give the praise to your Father in heaven.
The great mystery
of Marriage
(Ephesians 5, 2. 21-33)
And follow Christ by loving as he loved you, giving himself up in our
place as a fragrant offering and a sacrifice to God.
Give way to one another in obedience to Christ. Wives should regard
their husbands as they regard the Lord, since as Christ is head of the
Church and saves the whole body, so is a husband the head of his wife,
and as the Church submits to Christ, so should wives to their husbands,
in everything.
Husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the Church and
sacrificed himself for her to make her holy. He made her clean by
washing her in water with a form of words, so that when he took her to
himself she would be glorious, with no speck or wrinkle or anything
like that, but holy and faultless.
In the same way, husbands must love their wives as they love their own
bodies; for a man to love his wife is for him to love himself. A man
never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it: and that
is the way Christ treats the Church, because it is his body-and we are
its living parts.
For this reason, a
man must leave his father and
mother and be
joined to his wife, and the two will become one body.
This mystery has many implications; but I am saying it applies to
Christ and the Church. To sum up; you too, each one of you, must love
his wife as he loves himself; and let every wife respect her husband.
Love is Patient,
Love is Kind
(1 Corinthians 13, 4-13)
Love is always patient and kind; it is never jealous; love is never
boastful or conceited; it is never rude or selfish; it does not take
offense, and is not resentful.
Love take no pleasure in other people’s sins but delights in
the
truth; it is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure
whatever comes.
Love does not come to an end. But if there are gifts of prophecy, the
time will come when they must fail; or the gift of languages, it will
not continue for ever; and knowledge-for this, too, the time will come
when it must fail.
For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophesying is imperfect; but
once perfection comes, all imperfect things will disappear. When I was
a child, I used to talk like a child, and think like a child, and argue
like a child, but now I am a man, all childish ways are put behind me.
Now we are seeing a dim reflection in a mirror; but then we shall be
seeing face to face. The knowledge that I have now is imperfect; but
then I shall know as fully as I am known.
In short, there are three things that last; faith, hope and love and
the greatest of these is love.
