Pink Satin Purse

This satin purse will be a great gift for your bridesmaid’s, or even a gift for the mothers.

For the bride you could make the purse all in white or ivory (or even her colors). Try using different fabric such as velvet or even damask.

Materials

⅓ yard (30cm) pink duchess satin

⅓ yard (30cm) white polyester jacquard fabric (bag lining)

Dinner plate to make the curved bottom edge of the bag

4 inch (10cm) white lace motif

24 inches (61cm) white flat braid

30 inches (76cm) satin cord ¼ inch (.5cm) wide in contrasting color

Instructions to make the satin purse

  1. Cut two 7 by 10 ½ inch (18 by 26.5cm) pieces from the pink satin.

  2. Cut two pieces from the white lining fabric 7 by 10 ½ inch (18 by 26.5cm)

  3. Place the fabrics on top of each other; then position the plate over the fabric, align the curve of the plate at the bottom edge of the fabric.

Draw a curve, and then cut along the mark to create a curve at the bottom of the purse (all four layers should have the curve).

  4. Tack the decorative lace motif to the right side of one piece of satin (about 6cm from the bottom of the purse). Use the photo as a guide for positioning; making sure that the motive is centered and away from the edges of the fabric.

  5. Have the right sides of the satin fabric facing, align the edges, and stitch the pieces together, leaving the top edge (the un-curved edge) open. Turn the right side of the fabric to the outside. Press lightly.

  6. Have the right sides of the white lining fabric facing and sew along the two long sides, leave an opening of about 6cm at the bottom.

  7. Slip the stitched pink fabric inside the jacquard fabric (both of the right sides should be facing each other) stitch all the way along the top edge. Now pull the pink fabric through the opening of the lining.

  8. On the opening of the lining fold the seam allowance inside and stitch it close. Push the lining inside the pink fabric; you should not see any seam allowances it should all be neatly finished.

  9. Lightly press the seams flat.

  10. Hand-stitch the flat braid along the top edge of the bag and along the bottom of the front of the bag.

  11. Fold the cord in half, and then tack the centre of the cording to the centre back of the bag, 2 inches (5cm) from the top edge. Bring the cording to the front and tie into a bow. Knot the ends of the cord.

Fill the satin purse up with chocolates, scented soaps or other luxury items.

The satin purse could be used later to store jewelery or even lingerie.
