Finding
the best hairdresser
stylist for you doesn’t have to be the hardest decision of your
life, so before you start looking for a new hairdresser, here are some
hints to guide you to make your choice.
Referrals
One of the best ways to find a new hairdresser is to ask your family
and friends who they could recommend. If you see someone with a
hairstyle that you really like don’t be afraid to approach them
and ask them who cut their hair (most people will be really flattered).
Get a short list of four or five potential salons before making your
choice and then set up a consultation.
Type of Salon
Before making your choices consider what kind of salon appeals to you
(trendy, traditional, posh?) Each of these salons will have their own
personality and approach to their clients. |

Visit a Salon
Pay a visit to a potential salon and take the time to notice how the
salon runs (does the staff and clients look happy and relaxed?), are
hair books/magazines available to look at? If you really want to test
them out, book yourself in for a blow dry, and you should get a good
feel of the place before having any styling done.
Advertising
Good salons will advertise their services in the newspapers and
magazines, and most of them will have special offers, so look out for
the money saving coupons and some salons will be seeking “hair
models” (it is a great way of checking out if the salon is what
you are looking for).
Consultation
You have chosen the new salon, now is the time to schedule a
consultation. This is the first chance to build up a rapport with your
hairdresser stylist, so be honest about any hair problems, and wishes
that you have about your hair. The hairdresser should ask you lots of
questions, during the consultation and listen carefully to your
answers. This is also the time that you should ask questions about
their charges, products they use, opening times etc.
Pictures
If you have pictures of styles that you like, don’t be afraid to
take these with you. By bringing along the pictures of styles and
color, it will help your hairdresser understand what it is you want,
but don’t be upset if they tell you that it is not the style or
color for you.
Relationship
Build a strong relationship with your hairdresser stylist; this is
vital if you really want to get the best out of your hair.
Communication is the key, a good hairdresser will listen to your needs
and then offer their expert opinion. Honesty is important and your
hairdresser should be able to advise you on what will suit you. Once
you have found a good hairdresser stylist, hang on to them.
Appointment
Your first appointment with your new hairdresser stylist is very
important. Your hairdresser may not remember what you discussed at the
consultation, remind them of what was discussed. Be open to what your
hairstylist suggests, but do remember that it is your hair and you make
the final decision.
