The Wedding Gown Skirt

Nothing gives the feel of a gown more than the gown skirt. The first impression of the bride as she comes down the aisle is the skirt flowing gracefully behind her.

The skirt can be plain or act as a background for lace and other elements, such as beading, and appliqué.

It is usually the first part of the dress seen, because the bodice is usually hidden by the flowers and veil.

It is the rustle of the skirt that you hear as the bride walks down the aisle. Most dresses are divided into two pieces the bodice and the gown skirt.

You can create an entire new look by just changing the skirt and bodice styles, lets say that you like the bodice of one dress and the skirt of another, it may be quite possible to combine the two different styles to create a whole new look. If you wish to do this, check with your dressmaker to see if both styles can be combined to give a pleasing look.

Bouffant

Bouffant

This style has a very full skirt and can be worn with a hoop.  It is best worn by women with long legs and a slender body.

Box Pleat

Box Pleat

Deep, parallel pleats of fabrics go down the skirt. This style can be dramatic, when made in heavy satin, or have a lush look when made in other smooth fabrics.

Bustled Skirt

The fabric is gathered below the waistline in the back of the dress to give it fullness.

Another way to create a bustle is to have the train lifted and buttoned or hooked to the back of the dress. This style is very flattering for most women.

This design allows for the use of a train for the ceremony, and then the train can be raised for the reception so that the bride can move and dance easily.

Pickup Hemline

The hem line is gathered and draped in a curve to one point, then another point several times around the gown skirt.

It draws the eye down away for the center of the body, which can make a short woman look taller and a larger women look thinner.

It is a graceful and elegant look.

Trumpet Skirt

Trumpet Skirt

It is a slim skirt which hugs the body until it reaches mid thigh, where it flares out.

It can sometimes be hard to move in because the upper part of the skirt is tight.

Gathered Waist

The skirt fabric is gathered all around the waist line creating a full loose skirt.
