Flowers for the Ceremony and Reception

The first thing to consider when choosing the flowers for the ceremony and the reception is the space. Is it a small intimate room which would be best suited to smaller arrangements, or is it large, where an extravagant arrangement may be appropriate.

Regardless of where the marriage is to take place the flowers should reflect the style of the wedding. The flowers should carry over from the ceremony to the reception. One way to do this-and cut down on some of the costs-is to use the bridal and bridesmaid’s bouquets on the bridal table.

The arrangements should be placed where the guests will focus most of their attention, such as the alter at the church and on the tables at the reception. Listed below are various arrangements suitable for the church and reception.

  • Toppers and Base for wedding cakes
  • Table wreaths
  • Topiary
  • Fruit and flower centre piece
  • Candle centre piece
  • Pew decorations
  • Unity candle

Tip

Have the florist let you know when your wedding flowers have arrived and then go and see them. Make a time with the florist to see your bouquet being arranged so that you can make adjustments to it before it is finished.

Money Saving Tips

  • Ask the minister if there are other weddings on the same day. You may be able to share the cost of the flowers.
  • Use artificial flowers.
  • For the bridal bouquet carry one or two, single-stem flowers tied with ribbon.
  • Select flowers that are grown locally and ones that are in season.
  • Consider doing all or part of the arrangements yourself.
  • Use some flowers from the gardens of friends and family.
  • Use the brides and bridesmaids bouquets on the bridal table.
  • If decorating every chair or pew it will be expensive, decorate every second or third chair instead.
  • Use lots of greenery this is an inexpensive way to give a lush full effect.
  • If your florist is to set up the arrangements make sure that all costs are included in your written quote.
